Speaker: Cynthia Hendry
Program: “Gardens of Big Canoe”

    • This year Cynthia reports that her program will feature some of Big Canoe’s most seasoned gardeners and their gardens as well as gardeners with special interests.  A few of these  gardeners limit their efforts to deck gardening.

    • Some of the tenured gardeners have completed the trial and error period of their garden’s design process and have reached a point where they can relax and enjoy their achievement.
Other featured gardeners are plant collectors or have particular plant interests and are likely to always be adjusting their garden’s layout.

    • Cynthia reports that her own garden will probably always be a work in progress. Since  she is an avid plant collector, she always has new ideas and tips for the audience.
“Hopefully everyone in the audience will go home with fresh ideas for their own garden interest” she adds.

    • Cynthia cautions new gardeners “Depending on your home’s location in Big Canoe, you may face different weather, soils, and wildlife stresses.  Most of the valley neighborhoods are zone 7, but the higher elevations may have zone 6 weather conditions.  Each neighborhood differs seasonally with stress by wildlife.”

    • Cynthia has lived and gardened in Big Canoe for 33 years.  She writes the monthly Smoke Signals Mountain Gardening column.  She is an advocate for a naturalistic design, the use of native plants, and a sustainable, low maintenance garden.

Her design work  has included two show homes for the Georgian Highlands, Big Canoe’s Southern Living Show Home, three designs for the Street of Dreams at Big Canoe and the Atlanta Magazine Show Home at Big Canoe.  One of her designs won the best of show award for the Street of Dreams.
